In Islamic jurisprudence, discretionary payments are known as Sadaqah. Sadaqah refers to any voluntary charitable act or donation made with the intention of pleasing Allah and seeking His blessings. The concept of Sadaqah is mentioned in numerous verses of the Quran and is emphasized throughout Islamic teachings.

“And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195)

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)

There are several types of Sadaqah in Islam, including:

  1. Sadaqah al-Fitr: This is a mandatory charitable payment that is made by Muslims at the end of Ramadan before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is intended to provide food for the poor and needy during the Eid celebrations.
  2. Sadaqah Jariyah: This refers to a continuous or ongoing charity that has a lasting impact, such as building a mosque, a school, or a hospital.
  3. Sadaqah Nafl or Nafilah: This refers to any voluntary charitable act or donation made with the intention of seeking Allah’s blessings and getting closer to Him.
  4. Sadaqah Wajibah: This refers to a voluntary charitable act or donation that is considered to be obligatory, such as fulfilling a vow or oath made to Allah.
  5. Sadaqah Khairat: This refers to any charitable act or donation made with the intention of doing good and benefiting others.
  6. Sadaqah Sariyah: This refers to a secret or discreet charity given anonymously or without the recipient knowing the identity of the donor.
  7. Sadaqah Tijariyah: This refers to a charitable act or donation made in the course of business or trade, such as providing interest-free loans to those in need or supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs.
  8. Sadaqah Qurbani: This refers to a charitable act or donation made during the celebration of Eid al-Adha, where Muslims sacrifice an animal and distribute the meat to the poor and needy.
