International Day of Older Persons: Celebrating Wisdom and Experience

The International Day of Older Persons is observed annually on October 1st. It’s a global day dedicated to raising awareness of the contributions of older individuals to society and addressing the challenges they face.

Why Celebrate Older Persons?

  • Wisdom and Experience: Older adults bring a wealth of knowledge and life experiences that can benefit communities.
  • Social and Economic Contributions: They often continue to be active participants in the workforce and volunteer in their communities.
  • Rights and Dignity: It’s essential to ensure that older persons have their rights respected and can live with dignity.

Honoring Our Wise Elders: A Celebration of the International Day of Older Persons

At Our Islamic Charity, we believe in honoring and supporting those who have paved the way before us – our cherished elders. This International Day of Older Persons, we reflect on the immense contributions they make to our communities and the importance of ensuring their well-being.

Celebrating Wisdom and Experience

Our grandparents and senior members hold a wealth of knowledge and life experiences. They are living libraries of stories, traditions, and invaluable insights. Their wisdom guides us, their strength inspires us, and their love sustains us. During our recent visit to an elderly care home in Al-Mayadeen, Syria, we witnessed firsthand the profound impact of spending time with our elders. The residents, both men and women, formed a remarkable team, managing everything from cleaning and cooking to taking medication – a testament to their self-sufficiency and resilience.

A Day Filled with Connection and Joy

The highlight of our visit was simply spending time with these remarkable individuals. We listened to their stories, learned from their experiences, and shared heartfelt laughter. We were especially touched by the delicious meal prepared by the grandmothers – a culinary masterpiece that embodied the warmth and generosity of our elders.

This International Day of Older Persons wasn’t just about receiving; it was also about giving back. We presented gifts to all the residents at the care home, a small token of our appreciation for their presence in our lives. In return, they offered their heartfelt Duas, blessings for all Muslims around the world, especially our generous crypto donors who make such a difference in our work.

Supporting Our Elders: A Moral Imperative

As a Muslim charity, we recognize the importance of honoring and caring for our elders. The Quran emphasizes this responsibility in numerous verses, reminding us to treat them with kindness, compassion, and respect.

“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.”” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:23-24).

How You Can Make a Difference

There are many ways you can contribute to the well-being of older persons in your community:

  • Visit a local elderly care home: Share conversation, stories, and your time. Even a small gesture can make a big difference.
  • Reach out to elderly neighbors or relatives: Check in on them, offer assistance with errands, or simply have a friendly conversation.
  • Support organizations that work with seniors: Donate your time, resources, or skills to assist these vital causes. Our Islamic charity has always paid special attention to the elderly, and you can donate crypto to Muslim grandparents around the world and appreciate their efforts by supporting them.
  • Advocate for policies that support senior citizens: Promote access to healthcare, affordable housing, and social services.

By working together, we can create a world where our elders are valued, respected, and empowered to live fulfilling lives.

Together, let’s celebrate the wisdom, strength, and love of our elders. May we honor them every day, not just on International Day of Older Persons.

Physical Medicine for Elderly People and People with Physical Problems and Disabilities: Why Our Islamic Charity Cares

As an Islamic charity, we care deeply about the well-being and dignity of all people, especially those who are vulnerable and in need. One of the groups that we serve and support are elderly people and people with physical problems and disabilities. These are people who have conditions that affect their muscles, bones, joints, nerves, or other parts of their body. These are people who have suffered injuries or trauma, such as fractures, sprains, strains, burns, or wounds. These are people who have chronic diseases or disorders, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, or stroke. These are people who have congenital or developmental abnormalities, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or scoliosis. These are people who have undergone surgery or amputation, such as joint replacement, mastectomy, or limb removal. These are people who have aging-related problems, such as falls, fractures, or dementia.

These are people who need physical medicine.

What is Physical Medicine?
Physical medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of physical impairments and disabilities. Physical medicine can help people who have conditions that affect their muscles, bones, joints, nerves, or other parts of their body. Physical medicine can involve various methods and techniques, such as:

  • Physical therapy: This is the use of exercises, massage, heat, cold, electricity, ultrasound, or other physical agents to improve the function and movement of the body.
  • Occupational therapy: This is the use of activities, devices, or adaptations to help people perform their daily tasks and roles.
  • Speech therapy: This is the use of exercises, games, or devices to help people improve their communication and swallowing skills.
  • Prosthetics and orthotics: These are the use of artificial limbs or braces to replace or support missing or damaged body parts.
  • Assistive technology: These are the use of devices or systems to help people with disabilities perform tasks that they otherwise could not do.

Physical medicine can benefit people in many ways, such as:

  • Reducing pain and inflammation
  • Increasing strength and endurance
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Enhancing flexibility and range of motion
  • Preventing or delaying disability
  • Promoting health and wellness

How Does Our Islamic Charity Provide Physical Medicine?
As an Islamic charity, we provide physical medicine to elderly people and people with physical problems and disabilities in various ways. Some of the ways that we provide physical medicine are:

  • Medical camps: We organize regular medical camps in different areas where we offer free physical examinations and treatments to the needy. We also distribute medicines and supplies to the patients.
  • Mobile clinics: We operate mobile clinics that travel to remote or rural areas where access to health care is limited or unavailable. We provide basic physical services and referrals to the local residents.
  • Home visits: We conduct home visits where we offer personalized physical services and care to the patients who cannot travel to our facilities. We also monitor their progress and follow up with them regularly.
  • Equipment donation: We donate equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, canes, hearing aids, glasses, or dentures to the patients who need them. We also train them on how to use them properly.

These are some examples of how we provide physical medicine to elderly people and people with physical problems and disabilities. We always try to do it with compassion and professionalism,
as we believe that they are our brothers and sisters in humanity.

How Can You Support Our Physical Medicine Project?
As you can see, our physical medicine project is a noble and valuable cause that helps many people improve their lives and dignity. However, we cannot do it alone. We need your help to support this project and help us do more for more people.

May Allah accept your support and reward you with the best in this life and the next. Ameen.

Shielding the Vulnerable: A Look into Protection Services
It’s a sad reality, isn’t it? The most vulnerable members of our society – women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities – often find themselves at risk of human rights violations, exploitation, abuse, or violence. This is a battle we’ve been fighting for centuries, and yet, it remains a pressing issue. But have you ever stopped to consider the role of protection services in this fight?

Our Protectors: Who are They?
Picture this: a shield, steadfast and resilient, standing between threats and the vulnerable. That’s what protection services are – a sturdy shield providing a safety net for those at risk. These services range from social initiatives, legal aid, to specialized agencies, all working together like a well-coordinated orchestra playing a symphony of safety. They work tirelessly to prevent, respond to, and ensure accountability for violations against the vulnerable.

Isn’t it comforting to know that there are entities dedicated to safeguarding the rights and dignity of these individuals? The question is, are they doing enough? And how can we, as members of the same society, contribute?

The Role of Protection Services
Protection services are like the lighthouse in a storm. They guide the vulnerable away from the dangerous shores of abuse and exploitation, towards the safe harbors of respect, dignity, and equal rights. Their work is multi-faceted and includes a wide array of tasks.

For instance, they provide immediate response to instances of abuse, be it physical, emotional, or financial. This includes providing safe spaces for victims, offering counseling services, and facilitating legal proceedings. But their work doesn’t stop there. They’re also responsible for preventive measures, like raising awareness about human rights, educating people about the signs of abuse, and advocating for stricter laws and policies to deter potential violators.

Does it seem like a lot? That’s because it is. Protection services carry a huge responsibility on their shoulders. But remember, they’re not in this alone – we all have a role to play.

We’re All In This Together
So, what can we do to support these vital services? Simple acts can make a world of difference.

Start by educating yourself and others about human rights and the signs of abuse. Knowledge is power, and the more informed we are, the better we can protect ourselves and those at risk. Speak up when you see injustice, whether it’s in your community, workplace, or even within your own family. Remember, silence often enables the violator and disempowers the victim.

Donating to organizations that provide protection services is another great way to help. These organizations often rely on donations to fund their operations. Even a small contribution can help provide a meal, a safe place to sleep, or legal aid to someone in need.

Lastly, advocate for stronger policies to protect the vulnerable. This can be as simple as signing a petition or as involved as lobbying your local government. Every voice counts, and together, we can make a real difference.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need protection services. But as long as there are individuals at risk, we’ll need these shields to guard them. The fight against human rights violations, exploitation, abuse, and violence is a collective effort. It’s not just the duty of protection services, but ours as well. So, will you pick up your shield and join the fight?

The healthcare requirements of an individual can vary greatly, depending on their age, gender, lifestyle, and current health status. However, for the elderly, there are some common healthcare needs that often need to be addressed. Here are a few of them:

  1. Routine Health Check-ups: Regular check-ups are crucial for early detection of potential health issues. These visits can include blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol level checks, blood sugar tests, bone density scans, eye examinations, and hearing tests, among others.
  2. Medication Management: Many elderly individuals take prescribed medications for various chronic conditions. Proper medication management, which includes correct dosage and timing, is important to avoid drug interactions and side effects.
  3. Specialist Care: Older adults may require the services of medical specialists such as cardiologists, endocrinologists, orthopedic doctors, neurologists, and geriatricians, who are doctors specialized in the health care of older adults.
  4. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: Elderly people are more likely to experience falls, fractures, or have surgery. Therefore, they often need physical therapy or rehabilitation services to recover their mobility and independence.
  5. Mental Health Support: Aging can come with significant life changes that might affect mental health. Depression and anxiety are common among seniors. Access to mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors, can help address these issues.
  6. Nutritional Counseling: As metabolism slows with age and dietary needs change, nutritional counseling can help ensure seniors are getting the right foods and nutrients to stay healthy.
  7. Home Health Care: For those with mobility issues or who prefer to stay in their own home, home health care services provide medical care, including nursing care, physical therapy, and health monitoring, in the comfort of the individual’s home.
  8. Preventive Care: Vaccinations and immunizations, like the annual flu shot or the pneumococcal vaccine, are key to preventing illnesses. Screening tests, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and skin checks, are also important preventive measures.

Each elderly individual will have unique healthcare needs based on their personal health history and current condition, and a healthcare plan should be customized to meet those needs. The goal is always to optimize the individual’s health, quality of life, and independence.
