Safar is the second month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and it has some special significance in Islamic history and practice. According to some traditions, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated from Mecca to Medina in this month, and he also performed his miraculous night journey (isra) and ascension (miraj) to the heavens in this month.

According to most Islamic sources, the night journey, or Isra, did not happen in the month of Safar, but in the month of Rajab, which is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. The exact date of the Isra is not agreed upon by all scholars, but some say it was on the 27th night of Rajab.

Some Muslims also believe that this month is associated with some calamities and misfortunes, such as wars, plagues, and natural disasters. Therefore, giving Sadaqah(charity) and alms in the month of Safar is seen as a way of seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness, and warding off any evil or harm that may befall one.

Sadaqah or Zakat

Sadaqah, or zakat, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it is obligatory for every Muslim who has a certain amount of wealth to give a portion of it to the poor and needy. Zakat is not only a Sadaqah, but also a means of purifying one’s wealth and soul from greed and selfishness.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever pays the zakat on his wealth will have its evil removed from him.” Zakat is usually paid once a year, but some Muslims may choose to pay it more often or in advance.

Alms, or sadaqah, is a voluntary act of charity that can be given at any time and in any amount. Sadaqah can be given in various forms, such as money, food, clothes, or even a smile or a kind word. Sadaqah is a way of expressing gratitude to Allah for His blessings and protection.

The Prophet Muhammad and Sadaqah

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Every act of goodness is sadaqah.” Sadaqah can also be given on behalf of oneself or others, such as one’s parents, relatives, friends, or even the deceased.

Giving Sadaqah and Alms

Giving Sadaqah and alms in the month of Safar has many benefits and rewards for the giver and the receiver. Some of these are:

  • It protects one from calamity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Give Sadaqah without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” Giving Sadaqah and alms in Safar can help prevent or reduce the impact of any affliction that may occur in this month or in the future.
  • It increases one’s sustenance. Allah says in the Quran: “And whatever you spend of good – it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.” Giving Sadaqah and alms in Safar can increase one’s provision and wealth in this world and in the hereafter.
  • It purifies one’s heart. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Charity does not decrease wealth, nor does it increase illness; rather it increases honor.” Giving Sadaqah and alms in Safar can cleanse one’s heart from stinginess, envy, hatred, and other diseases that may affect one’s faith and character.
  • It brings one closer to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are continuous, even if they are little.” Giving Sadaqah and alms in Safar can make one more beloved to Allah and earn His pleasure and forgiveness.

Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to give Sadaqah and alms generously and sincerely in the month of Safar, as well as in other months. This is a way of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was the most generous of people, especially in Safar. He said: “there is no evil in the month of Safar, it is understood that when a person does good deeds, this pushes the calamities away.”

The Best of Good Deeds

The best of good deeds a person can do is giving Sadaqah, for sadaqah extinguishes the wrath of God, The All Merciful. Giving Sadaqah and alms is also a way of showing compassion and solidarity with the poor and needy, who are our brothers and sisters in Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The believers are like one body; if one part suffers, the whole body feels pain.”

May Allah accept our Sadaqah and alms, protect us from calamity, increase our sustenance, purify our hearts, and bring us closer to Him. Ameen.
