Ziyarat al-Arba’in in English

Ziyara / Supplication

Although the two following texts are intended to be recited when visiting (ziyarah) the Holy Shrine of Imam al-Husayn (a), but reciting them from wherever on the Arba’in day is also recommended:

First Form
There’s a ziyarah which al-Shaykh al-Tusi narrated in the books of Tahdhib al-ahkam and Misbah al-mutahajjid from Safwan al-Jammal:

My master Imam al-Sadiq (a) told me about the ziyarah of Imam al-Husayn (a) in the day of Arba’in: when a part of day had passed, recite this:
Peace be upon the friend of Allah and His beloved; peace be upon the close friend of Allah and His chosen one; peace be upon the elite of Allah and the son of His elite; peace be upon Husayn, the oppressed, the martyr; peace be upon the captive of sorrows and the slain for whom the tears are shed.
O, Allah, I testify that he is Your friend and the son of Your friend; and Your elite and the son of Your elite; the one who achieved salvation through Your grace. You honored him with the martyrdom, and You delivered him to happiness, and chose him through pure birth, and made him a chief from the chiefs, and a leader from the leaders, and a defender from the defenders. And You gave him the inheritances of the Prophets, and You made him -among the successors- a proof for Your creatures.
So he left no place for excuse by his call, and presented the advice, and gave the blood of his heart in Your way, to save your servants from the ignorance, and the confusion of deviation, (He did so) when those who have been incited by the worldly life have supported each other against him, those who have sold their afterlife for the lowest bargain, and strutted and followed their desire, and angered You and Your prophet, and obeyed -among Your servants- the people of disunion and hypocrisy, and the bearers of burdens (of sin) who deserve the fire. So he fought them in Your way, patiently, expecting (Your pleasure) until his blood shed in Your obedience, and his dignity violated. O Allah, so curse them with a great curse, and punish them with a painful punishment.
Peace be upon you, O son of the Prophet of Allah; peace be upon you, O son of the master of successors; I testify that you are the trusted one of Allah and the son of His trusted one; lived blessed, and passed away praised; and died deceased, martyred, oppressed. And I testify that Allah will fulfill what He has promised you, and will destroy those who humiliated you, and will punish those who killed you. And I testify that you fulfilled the pledge of Allah, and you fought in His way, until the certain (death) came to you. May Allah curse those who killed you, and may Allah curse those who oppressed you, and may Allah curse the people who heard that and were pleased by it.
O Allah, I ask you witness that indeed I am in peace with who is in peace with him, and I am in war against who is in war against him.
May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you O son of the Prophet of Allah. I testify that you were a light in the lofty loins and the purified wombs, the ignorance did not taint you with its impurities, and did not its darkness cover you with its cloak. And I testify that you are one of the leaders of the religion, and the pillars of Muslims, and the refuge of the believers. And I testify that you are the righteous, the pious, the pleased, the pure, the guide, the guided Imam. And I testify that Imams of your progeny are the maxims of piety, and the signs of the guidance, and the strong rope, and the proof over the people of the world, and I testify that I believe in you and in your return, certain about the laws of my religion and the results of my deeds, and my heart is obedient to your heart, and my affair is in line with your affair, and my support will be ready for you until Allah permits you. So (I am) with you, with you, not with your enemy. May the blessings of Allah be upon you, and upon your souls, and your bodies, and your apparent (ones), and your hidden (one), and your outside and your inside. Amen, O Lord of the worlds.
After that, pray two rak’as, then supplicate as you want.

Second Form
There’s another ziyarah which is narrated from Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah al-Ansari, by ‘Atiyya al-‘Awfi (who was in accompany of Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah al-Ansari in his travel to ziyarah of Imam al-Husayn (a) in Arba’in):

In the 20th of Safar I was accompanying Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah al-Ansari, when we reached Karbala, he performed a ghusl in the Euphrates water, put on clean clothes brought with him, then said: do you have any perfume? I answered: I have “sa’d”. He used some of it, and began walking bare footed, so when he reached the grave of Imam al-Husayn (a), said takbir 3 times and fainted, when he became conscious, I heard him saying: “Peace be upon you, O people of Allah…” which is the same as the ziyarah of Imam al-Husayn (a) in the fifteenth of Rajab:
Peace be upon you, O people of Allah; peace be upon you, O elite of Allah; peace be upon you, O chosen ones of Allah; peace be upon you, O selected ones of Allah among his creatures; peace be upon you, O chiefs of the chiefs; peace be upon you, O lions of the jungles (brave people); peace be upon you, O arks of redemption.
Peace be upon you, O Aba ‘Abd Allah al-Husayn; peace be upon you, O the inheritor of the knowledge of the prophets; and the mercy and blessings of Allah (be upon you). Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Adam, the elite of Allah; peace be upon you the inheritor of Nuh, the prophet of Allah; peace be upon you the inheritor of Ibrahim, the friend of Allah; peace be upon you the inheritor of Isma’il, the slaughtered for Allah; peace be upon you the inheritor of Musa, the spoken to by Allah; peace be upon you, the inheritor of ‘Isa, the spirit from Allah; peace be upon you, the inheritor of Muhammad, the beloved by Allah; peace be upon you, O son of Muhammad, the chosen; peace be upon you, O son of ‘Ali, the one (who Allah is) pleased with; peace be upon you, the son of Fatima al-Zahra’; peace be upon you, O son of Khadija the great; peace be upon you, O martyr and the son of the martyr; peace be upon you, O slain and the son of the slain; peace be upon you, O friend of Allah and the son of the friend of Allah; peace be upon you, O proof of Allah and the son of the proof of Him to his creatures.
I testify that you held the prayer, and paid zakat, and enjoined the good, and forbade the evil, and suffered from the loss of your parents, and you fought you enemy. And I testify that you hear the word, and you answer, and you are the beloved of Allah and His friend, and His chosen one, and His elite and the son of His elite. O my master and the son of my master, I visited you with eagerness; so, O my master, be my interceder before Allah, and intercede for me by your grandfather, the master of the prophets; and by your father, the master of the successors; and by your mother, the lady of all ladies of the worlds.
Verily, may Allah curse your killers, and may Allah curse those who oppressed you, and may Allah curse those who deprived you (of your rights), and those who hated you; the past and the coming people. May Allah send blessings upon our master Muhammad and his household, the immaculate, the pure.
Then turn to the tomb of ‘Ali al-Akbar and say:
Peace be upon you, O my master and the son of my master; may Allah curse those who killed you, and may Allah curse those who oppressed you. Indeed, I seek closure to Allah by your ziyarah (visit) and by your love, and I dissociate from your enemies to Allah. And peace be upon you my master, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Then turn to the martyr companions of Imam al-Husayn (a) and say
Peace be upon the souls residing near the tomb of Abu ‘Abd Allah Husayn, peace upon you O the purified from the filth; peace be upon you, O the guided; peace be upon you, O the pious ones of Allah; peace be upon you and upon all the angels surrounding your graves. May Allah gather you and us in the settlement of His mercy, and under His throne; indeed He is the most merciful of all of those who show mercy. And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Then perform the ziyarah of al-‘Abbas b. ‘Ali (a).
