As a Muslim, I have always been fascinated by the night journey, or Isra, that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made in one night from Mecca to Jerusalem and then to heaven. It is a journey that I believe in with all my heart and soul, as it is mentioned in the Quran, the holy book of Islam, and explained in the hadith, the collections of the sayings and deeds of Muhammad and his companions.
The night journey is a miracle that proves Muhammad’s prophethood and Islam’s truthfulness. It is a journey that no one else has ever made or will ever make. It is a journey that changed history and destiny. It is a journey that every Muslim should know about and appreciate.
Night journey in the Quran
The night journey is mentioned briefly in the Quran, the holy book of Islam, in chapter 17, verse 1: “Glory to Him who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”
The Sacred Mosque refers to the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest site for Muslims. The Farthest Mosque refers to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, which is also a sacred place for Muslims, Jews and Christians. The verse implies that Muhammad was taken by Allah from Mecca to Jerusalem in a miraculous way, without any human or natural intervention.
I have studied the details of the night journey from various sources and perspectives, and I have tried to understand its meanings and implications. I have also visited Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where Muhammad met with other prophets and led them in prayer. I have felt the spiritual connection and the sacredness of the place. I have also prayed there and asked Allah to bless me with His guidance and mercy.
The night journey is not just a physical journey, but also a spiritual one. It shows us the greatness of Allah and His power over everything. It shows us the honor and respect that Allah has given to Muhammad and his followers. It shows us the connection and continuity between all the prophets and their messages. It shows us the beauty and diversity of Allah’s creation. It shows us the rewards and punishments for our actions in this life and the hereafter.
The night journey also teaches us many lessons and values that we should apply in our lives as Muslims. It teaches us about the importance of prayer, which is the pillar of Islam and the link between us and Allah. It teaches us about faith, which is the foundation of our belief and the source of our strength. It teaches us about patience, which is the virtue of enduring hardships and trials with hope and trust in Allah. It teaches us about perseverance, which is the quality of striving for excellence in our worship and deeds. It teaches us about respect, which is the attitude of honoring all the prophets and their followers, regardless of their differences. It teaches us about unity, which is the state of being one as Muslims, under one God, one prophet, one book, one direction, one goal.
The night journey is a story that I love to tell and hear. It is a story that inspires me and motivates me. It is a story that fills me with awe and gratitude. It is a story that makes me proud to be a Muslim and a follower of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
